Hemmed in between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans near the narrowest point of the Central American isthmus, Costa Rica is a land of milk and honey

A peaceful oasis in a historically tumultuous region, this democratic and prosperous nation is one of the most bio-diverse areas on the planet, enjoying breath-taking natural beauty across a range of magnificent habitats, as well as a comfortable, laid-back way of life.

Bordered by the lush tropical jungles of Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the southeast and flanked by both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica is an an ecological treasure-trove, home to verdant rainforests, pristine beaches, steaming volcanoes and thick mangrove swamps, all of which support a fascinating variety of wildlife.

In sharp contrast to the brutal internal conflicts that have ravaged its neighbours, Costa Rica has a long-standing democratic tradition and history of peace – the army was abolished in 1948 and the country has enjoyed an absence of military forces ever since. This halcyon way of life has played a major role in the country’s ranking as one of the world’s most visited international destinations, making tourism the main source of income.

This tiny slice of tropical heaven offers visitors a plethora of adventures, excursions and attractions to explore, from hiking trails through ancient rainforests, climbing active volcanoes or exploring the Americas’ last vestiges of high-altitude cloud forests that are home to jaguar, tapir and the resplendent quetzal.

Head to Costa Rica’s most visited national park, Manuel Antonio National Park, whose pristine coastlines have been battered by the Pacific Ocean into a magnificent display, tropical islands, eroded cliffs, errant coves and white-sandy beaches, surrounded by verdant rainforests, marshy woodlands and mangrove swamps teeming with an array of birds and wildlife.

The Saint Helena Cloud Forest Reserve is another must-see, with fantastic hiking trails, bird and wildlife watching, while the Arenal Volcano National Park draws on the imagination with its unique and bizarre landscapes.

Despite attracting more than two million visitors every year, Costa Rica remains a place rich in natural wonders and biodiversity, where you can still find yourself far from the maddening crowds. Boasting a wealth of unsullied beaches that stretch for miles, small lodgings that haven’t attracted hordes of tourists, jungle rivers for rafting and kayaking, and spectacular cloud forests and rainforests with ample opportunities for bird-watching and hiking, this gem in Central America’s crown has something for everyone.
