Brazil is a vast, dynamic country full of life, colour and rhythms.

Brazil is a vast, dynamic country full of life, colour and rhythms. The coastline is one long sun-drenched beach stretching 4,600 miles, while inland is the immense Amazon Rainforest and the stunning grassy wetlands of the Pantanal, great for viewing exotic wildlife. Add the magnificent Iguazu Falls, the delights of Rio de Janeiro and the culture of Ipanema and Salvador and you have the essence of Brazil!

While a few days at the five star Copacabana Beach Hotel is the perfect base from which to visit Sugar Loaf Mountain and enjoy the vibrant city of Rio, you may want to head a couple of hours north to Buzios for a top quality beach stay. It’s quieter, more sophisticated and from a boutique hotel like Casas Brancas you can sit on the terrace and watch life drift past around the bay. As the sun sets, wander the shoreline and dine at your favourite bistro.

If you like your beaches more brightly, tropical and earthy, fly north into the tropics to Salvador where Brazil’s cultural heart beats strongest. Street corners and beaches beat to the rhythm of the samba. It’s here that Brazil’s Indian, African and Portuguese heritage is most evident. Grand, opulently ornamented churches bake in the sun amidst faded buildings with red-tiled roofs around old squares named after famous liberators. The beach is big, golden and endless with palm trees swaying in the breeze and a vast blue ocean sparkling in the sun.

A fifth of the world’s fresh water flows in the Amazon Rainforest – an enormous, humming, screeching cacophony of wildlife and greenery. Fly up to Manaus and take a lazy riverboat ride down the Amazon, drinking in the atmosphere, visiting fishing villages and watching riotously colourful birds at play. Brazil is one of the best places on earth for nature lovers.

By way of contrast, the fun-loving Brazilians themselves are a fascinating cultural mix, shaped not only by the first Portuguese settlers and early African slaves, but more recently by the influxes of European, Arabic and Japanese immigrants. It all adds up to a complex yet interesting ethnic heritage and you are never too far away from a festival of some sort!

On the border with Argentina, you’ll find the world’s greatest waterfall – Iguazu; where millions of tons of water crash over two levels of falls forming a giant horseshoe. Enjoy wandering the walkways above, below and around the falls getting truly drenched and deafened. And for that adrenalin rush, jump into a speedboat which will power its way alarmingly close to the thundering cliffs of Iguazu.

While the west coast countries of South America like Chile and Peru, have cold oceans, you can easily combine these with a few days in Brazil for beach relaxation or the bright lights of Rio de Janeiro.
