Bolivia is one of the continent’s most scenically diverse countries, with a rich history and abundant wildlife. It is a crossroads between Peru, Chile, Brazil and Argentina

The west of Bolivia is dominated by the high Andes which cradle Lake Titicaca and the capital La Paz, at 12,000 feet the world’s highest. Head south through the majestic Andes and you come to the vast expanses of Uyuni – the world’s largest salt lake. Continue southwards through little towns where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid held up banks until you come to the wild north west of Argentina. The entire north of Bolivia falls away from the Andes into immense tracts of rainforest while in the east fertile farmlands extend for hundreds of miles towards Brazil.

You may enter Bolivia crossing over Lake Titicaca from Peru, and it is well worth spending a couple of days in La Paz, exploring the colourful street markets which run uphill from the historic Plaza San Francisco. If you’ve arrived at La Paz by air we’ll take you to spend a day on Lake Titicaca with a boat ride to the Isla del Sol where you can enjoy terrific views across the lake and explore Inca ruins. While you may not associate Bolivia with wildlife, the Amazon Rainforest is just an hour north by plane. A motor boat then takes you on a fascinating journey wending along waterways and lakes on its way to Chalalan Eco Lodge. There you can enjoy jungle walks, boat and canoe rides surrounded by primates, many of Bolivia’s 1,400 birds species, butterflies and forest animals.

An hour flight south of La Paz takes you to the Uyuni Salt Flats; an utterly flat white expanse covering over 4,000 square miles – the largest in the world. You can even stay in a hotel made of salt; the Salt Moon Hotel and enjoy a delicious dinner overlooking the endless flats illuminated by the bright light of the moon and a thousand stars. The stark appearance of the flats is eerily broken by the craggy tips of submerged volcanoes. Salt lakes are home to flocks of pink flamingos, and if you complete the journey across Uyuni you come to the Atacama Desert of Northern Chile.

Continuing south from Uyuni you can explore small Andean towns with adobe churches until you reach the Argentine border. From there you head towards Salta passing through the colourful deserts uplands and fertile valleys of Argentina’s spectacular “Northwest”.

Bolivia is often overlooked in favour of its better known neighbours, yet it is at the heart of the continent and attractively off the “tourist trail”.
