Welcome to the land of delightful estancias, Patagonian glaciers, vineyards, gauchos and the tango. Comprising almost the entire southern half of South America, Argentina is the world’s eighth largest country. It is so full of rich diversity that you could easily spend three weeks and feel you have only scratched the surface. In the far northwest you can explore the big red mountains near the Bolivian border and in the deep south you are surrounded by the icy immensity of glaciers, fjords and cobalt blue lakes of Patagonia. In between you can watch a tango show in elegant Buenos Aires and sample fine estate bottled wines from your Estancia in Mendoza. You can ride with gauchos across the Pampas, tour the towering peaks and forests of the Andes and spend a day admiring the world’s greatest waterfall at Iguazu.
The best time to visit Argentina is November to April, when you can enjoy magnificent Patagonian landscapes in pleasant summer temperatures. At the exclusive Hosteria Los Notros lodge, we’ll book you a room with privileged views across the glassy blue lake to the towering ice walls of the Perito Moreno glacier. Continuing south you can follow the routes of early explorers, cruising past penguin colonies and ice-fields of the Magellan straits aboard a Cruceros Australis ship.
The Andes run the length of Western Argentina like a gigantic snow-capped “spine”. In the temperate south the foothills are cloaked in forests where you can explore magnificent lakes around Bariloche, perhaps enjoying a round of golf at the stunning Llao Llao course. Further north are vast vineyards covering sun drenched Andean valleys. We’ll take you into the heart of the Argentine winelands sampling superb wines and delicious cuisine at a traditional Estancia, where you will be welcomed as members of the family. In the northwest the desert scenery around Salta resembles the set of a spaghetti western with cacti, dry red mountains and pretty white churches.
On the way home, pause for a few days amid the grandeur of the capital Buenos Aires. Wander the classical squares, take in a tango show, and if you fancy a few days on the beach, we’ll take you across the River Plate by ferryboat to neighbouring Uruguay with its charming unhurried pace of life.
