Clustered around Mandalay are former capitals of Burma with enchanting settings and classic architecture.

Just south of the city is the much photographed 200 year old U Bein bridge where Buddhist monks and villagers cross the lake on its narrow teak planks. Behind the bridge towers is Sagaing hill, encrusted with countless whitewashed stupas, spires and temples.

In Sagaing itself you’ll stand entranced at the U Min Thonze pagoda with its 45 ornately carved Buddhas lining an elaborately ornate curved grotto. If you are able to devote several days to this area we’ll arrange private tours with an expert guide. You’ll be rewarded by the architectural glories of Inwa with its 500 year old teak monastery and you’ll have time to wander around the old quarter of Amarapura with its family silk workshops.

To step back 100 years to colonial times we’ll arrange a two hour fascinating road trip 3500 feet up to Pyin Oo Lwin in the cool and verdant Shan Plateau with its breathtaking views of the Mandalay plains. The charming Governor’s House hotel near the botanical gardens is the perfect place to stay in Burma’s “city of flowers”.

Bagan’s two thousand temples, pagodas and stupas were mostly built in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries before the invasion by Kublai Khan.
G1 - Lake Inle scenery
Lake Inle
Watch the local Intha fishermen at work with their strange one legged rowing technique and take a leisurely stroll around the colourful fishing villages on market day.
G2 - Ngapali beach with small pagodas
Ngapali
Local fishermen still outnumber tourists and the beaches are pure white fringed by palm trees and lapped by translucent waters a dozen shades of blue.
1 - Shwedagon Pagoda
Yangon
The 2500 year old Shwedagon pagoda is a magnificent golden symbol of the country’s Buddhism and the first of many marvellous cultural sights.
