Witnessing History in the Making:
In February, our Head of Sustainability, Rory Wood, and a small group of clients watched the final release of 21 black rhino into Kenya’s Loisaba Conservancy.

Having been missing from the area for 50 years, this was the last step in the mission to reintroduce the species.

We were privileged to be the only travel company permitted at the release and took a spectacularly lucky handful of guests to be part of this precious moment on our first Small Group, Big Impact trip - and there really was no better seat in the house!
Rory Wood, Head of Sustainability:
“The rhino relocation in Loisaba is quite literally history in the making in Kenya. Loisaba Conservancy has worked tirelessly to make sure they are ready for rhino and, with the president's permission, 21 black rhino were finally translocated in January and February 2024 to the conservancy, their new home.

Our group was lucky enough to arrive on the same day as the final three rhinos finished their journey all the way from Nairobi National Park, a very secretive affair!
Following a year working together with Loisaba Conservancy CEO, Tom Silvester, on our Kenya Conservation Small Group Big Impact journey - an initiative aimed to take a small group of clients behind the scenes of conservation while investing the profits back into the cutting edge conservation efforts in the area -, he invited our group of seven to witness the release, something no other tourist had been given permission to do.

When we arrived, there were a few vehicles from the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Loisaba management, we were truly the odd ones out. We sat patiently waiting for the huge trucks transporting the final three rhinos to arrive.
There was a palpable sense of anticipation as the crates were lowered to the ground.

Amazingly, once they were in place, we were invited to clamber on top of one of the crates and we watched in awe as each rhino was carefully released into the wild.

Below me was number 21, the final release - once she was free the whole place erupted in applause and there was a real sense that we were witnessing a historic moment for rhinos, Kenya and global conservation.

An incredible success story that has just begun!”

The Future of the Black Rhino
The black rhino is critically endangered following years of poaching - the severity of which saw Kenya’s population decrease from 20,000 to under 400 in 20 years.

Thanks to tremendous conservation efforts, the population currently sits at 850 and authorities are deeply committed to increasing this.

The released rhino have come from various Kenyan parks and were translocated to Loisaba where they will have around 28,000 acres to enjoy.

Here, they are protected by low-profile level fencing plus a world-class security operation.

Loisaba Conservancy; A Wildlife Haven
Located in Laikipia, the Loisaba Conservancy has long been a Journeysmiths favourite.

It’s a wildlife haven providing habitat for various mammals including giraffe, big cats, elephant, plus 250 species of bird and even rare black leopard. Today it’s home to 21 black rhino too.

Delighted to be involved in the reintroduction, Tom Silvester, Loisaba’s CEO said: “It means so much to us on Loisaba to see this iconic species come home again and it is a mark of Kenya’s conservation success.”

Below are our favourite highlights and our perfect property choices to stay in Laikipia.
